چکیده
INTRODUCTION Acute abscesses are one of the most common acute problems seen in the surgical department of the R.D. Gardi Medical College (Ujjain, Madyha Pradesh, India). A conventional method used in the treatment of abscess is incision and drainage. The aim of this study was to compare the conventional method of incision and drainage with the alternative method of incision and drainage with primary closure, and use of a closed suction drain to reduce secondary infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred fifty patients admitted to the authors' hospital with an abscess were randomly divided into 2 groups: Group A included 75 patients treated by incision and drainage with primary closure and use of a closed suction drain; Group B included 75 patients treated by the conventional method of incision and drainage only. RESULTS Healing time in Group A patients was less than that of Group B patients. The length of hospital stay and number of additional hospital visits for dressing changes were less for Group A patients. CONCLUSION The method of incision and drainage with primary closure combined with use of a closed suction drain is more effective than that of incision and drainage only.

Comparison of Primary Wound Closure with Vacuum Drainage and Delayed Closure in Perforated Appendicitis
Open wound managment after perforated appendicitis has been a common practice but recently, primary closure has been advocated to reduce costs and morbidity. For comparing delayed closures against primary closure with vacuum drainage, a randomized experimental study was designed. in Kerman. Sixty patients with perforated appendicitis divided randomly in two groups and evaluated on day of discha...

متن کاملNegative Pressure Wound Therapy on Closed Surgical Wounds With Dead Space
BACKGROUND Closed incisional wound surgery frequently leaves dead space under the repaired skin, which results in delayed healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on incisional wounds with dead space after primary closure by evaluating the fluid volume through the suction drain, blood flow of the skin, tensile strength, and histolog...
متن کاملPrimary versus secondary closure of cutaneous abscesses in the emergency department: a randomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVES Cutaneous abscesses have traditionally been treated with incision and drainage (I&D) and left to heal by secondary closure. The objective was to compare the healing rates of cutaneous abscesses following I&D after primary or secondary closure. METHODS This was a randomized, controlled, trial, balanced by center, with blocked randomization created by a random-number generator. One u...
متن کاملInitial Experience Using Closed Incision Negative Pressure Therapy after Immediate Postmastectomy Breast Reconstruction
Although immediate postmastectomy breast reconstruction is favored over delayed reconstruction, it remains associated with high complication rates. Potential complications include seroma formation, dehiscence, infection, and tissue necrosis along incision edges. Closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT; Prevena Incision Management System, KCI, an Acelity company, San Antonio, Tex.) has ...
